childhood obesity grants According to the NYS Department of Health, 1/3 of children in NYS are obese or overweight; a rate that has tripled over the past 3 decades. In an article titled “Obesity rates trending upward among Erie County children” published in The Buffalo News this past November, a map of childhood obesity in Western New York was provided, as well as a discussion of area school districts with concerning  overweight/obesity statistics.

To assist in reversing this disturbing trend, the US Department of Education provides grant funding to school districts and community-based organizations to “initiate, expand, and improve physical education for students in grades K-12” through its Carol White Physical Education Program (PEP), expected to be released March 15, 2016. These 3-year grants allow grantees to implement a range of activities to improve students’ access to quality physical education opportunities.
